This Tokyo band combines elements of spoken word, poetry, and avant rock invoking the odd No Wave sound of Mars and Sonic Youth, yet the smooth flow of the music and the innate soul of Azuma, a true Tokyo poet, keep them rooted in the Beat Generation of yesteryear. Indeed, Azuma has spoken his ninhongo poems in various NYC poet haunts several years ago. Together with FLIGHT OF IDEA his words become alive, charged and often humorous even if you cannot follow Japanese worth a dime.

PACIFICTION REVIEW:This is a soundtrack for a day in the life of Tokyo as told through manic poetry backed by avant rock rhythms and pseudo jazz stylings. Tokyo poet Azuma invokes the days when Beat poets placed words on level with improvised music. Opening the album in No Wave fashion, "FIRST QUESTION?" crawls along with ambient guitars and stumbling percussion. "FOCUS IN THE MIRROR" places you in a frantic pulp thriller where the hero, half ruined by whiskey must see himself face to face. With the a double bass backdrop, "SCISSORS HANDS" takes us back to jazz cafe's of the Beatnik era while "GOODNIGHT REQUIEM" softly leads us into the early hours... but, is it walking home from the City Lights Bookstore or leaving a small company of friends behind at the izakaya? On a Day, FLIGHT OF IDEA wanders through many areas of the spoken word form, yet remains undeniably connected to Japan through language and feel which makes this recording a fascinating cross-cultural look at poetry and music. |
