PACIFICTION REVIEW:

Starting out at the tail end of the rock revolution that characterized the 1960's, undoubtedly THE DOGS had some influence on the music of the late 70's, even becoming identified with the punk scene as it ripped through the 80's. Now we have an international tribute with bands from Australia, New Zealand, the US and Japan to celebrate independent music from across the globe, Detroit rock and, of course, THE DOGS' own revolution! Placing the compilation in a historic context are the evangelical ravings of Jimmy Swaggart against various evils of the day including the 60's music scene, various radical groups and... miniskirts! In between is a veritable onslaught of top notch rock 'n' roll, garage, punk, metal and hardcore bands paying homage to the band that has come to symbolize the sublime transition of the "Revolution" from rock to punk.

Impossible to describe all the great contributions on this collection, the following stand out. JACKIE & THE CEDRICS, the surf challengers of Japan, do a frat rock version of "Rebel Rock." The self styled mod group, THE FACEFUL appropriately cover the classic "Are You A Boy, Or, Are You A Girl?" A Detroit rock tribute album wouldn't be complete without THE GIMMIES! BORIS make an appearance with "Slither," reinforcing the original acid rock sound with their doom metal stomp. The hyper rock 'n' roll frenzy provided by MAD3 on "Rebel Rock" will get you jumping around the kennel! New Zealand's D4 rocks out with a driving beat and a sound true to the Detroit scene on "Sleaze City." MELT-BANANA launches off the second disc into a charging synth punk version of "GST 483" bringing THE DOGS into the 21st century! ED WOODS provide a souped-up psychobilly rendition of "Everything Is Cool." Hardcore rhythms and metal undertones mark THE FLY-WHEEL's (a.k.a. THE ABNORMALS) appearance on "I Want." One of the legends of Japanese punk, THE GENBAKU ONANIES (translated, The Nuclear Masturbation!) help make this tribute the milestone it is. The dirty blues found on "Spooky Tricks" are made by the perfect combination of Japan's garage-blues premiers KING BROTHERS and the southern stylings of ROITAN. "Oh Yeah!" is THE DOGS' quintessential song about the rock 'n' roll life, and no one could do it more justice than TEXAS TERRI! THE GO-DEVILS, an all girl garage band from Osaka, amp up their sound to match THE DOGS for "Class Of 1970." In addition to this panoramic homage, three DOGS' tracks have been included: "L.A. Times," recorded in 1976 and unreleased until now, and two live songs from 1971, "Motor City Rock" and "John Rock," an earlier take on "John Rock & Roll Sinclair," THE DOGS' ode to the MC5 manager sentenced to ten years for possessing two joints of marijuana. There you have it, twenty-nine songs in tribute and three by THE DOGS themselves!

With cover artwork by the famed Rockin' Jelly Bean and an ample booklet with anecdotes about the contributing bands, classic photos of the DOGS and a testimonial by John Sinclair himself, this tribute becomes complete. It stands out as a monument reflecting the spirit of the original Rock Revolution and also serves to introduce a new breed of rock bands to audiences far and wide.
